Ration Challenge - The Ingredients and what you can cook with them


Ration Challenge pack

You should be able to cook most of these on a gas hob/camping stove. An oven helps with a few items (baked stuff). A good quality food processor or smoothie maker or stick blender helps for grinding things, although you could use a pestle and mortar and muscle power for grinding stuff...

Remember: The idea is to mirror the Refugee experience as closely as possible in terms of food. We do have the advantage of mod cons, although some people have tried doing without those. 

Ingredient

Ideas for cooking


Plain White Rice

Congee (i) salt and spices (ii) fried congee fritters

Fried Rice with salt and spices plus vegetable

Mujadara with lentils and spices

Rice cakes with spices

Rice bread

Rice Milk

Filling for Samosas, with beans, chickpeas, vegetable

Filling for Quesadillas with beans, vegetable

Filling for Burritos with beans, vegetable

Rice flatbread with spices

Sushi with beans and sardines 

Rice Crispies

Rice Crisps

 

Plain Flour

Chapattis with spices

Flatbread with spices

Parathas with spices and filling to make stuffed parathas

Pastry – for samosas with water and oil

Crepes with spices

Pancakes with aquafaba / rice milk / Milk  and spices.

Sourdough bread – need to prepare the starter the week before. Self-starter.

Pasties

 

Dry Lentils

Mujadara with rice and spices

Lentil pancake with spices

Lentil soup with spices and onion or tomatoes or carrots

Tarka Dhal with spices and onion or tomatoes

 

Can of Kidney beans

Dip with aquafaba and spices

Bean Pattie / Burger with spices and vegetable and/or sardines

sushi

 

Dry  Chickpeas

Hummus with spices

Falafel with spices

Chickpea curry with spices and onion and/or tomatoes

Fried chickpeas (snack) with spices

 

Can of Sardines

Kedgeree with egg

Crushed with rice and spices

Curry with spices, tomatoes and/or onions

Sushi

 

Aquafaba

(Liquid from Kidney beans can or when you boil your chickpeas)

Vegan Mayonnaise, kidney bean dip

 

Milk

Tea

Cake with flour and carrots, Rice pudding


Soy

Tofu

Seitan

These are Sardine replacement items. You can also use 120g of DRAINED beans/chickpeas/lentils. Not extra aquafaba allowed 

Quorn NOT allowed but can be used as a protein reward

 


Note: This year (2021) you can also have a can of tomatoes as a reward
